Due to strong business growth, Wynns Locksmiths was running out of room in its small parts warehouse in Preston, Victoria. The 1,000m2 warehouse stores padlocks, safes, and lock barrels and cylinders to service the industrial/commercial, residential, and automotive sectors in Melbourne.

Due to the expense, Wynns wanted to avoid moving premises while at the same time, maximise its warehouse space to not only meet current storage needs, but also future-proof its storage capacity for the next five years.

Wynns chose stow Australia as its storage partner based on the high quality of stow’s products and its ability to install within tight timeframes.

stow is a leading supplier of storage solutions and is recognised for the quality and safety of its European rack, the speed of supply, and the experience and expertise of its project installation teams.

More storage without increased footprint

After analysing Wynns’ warehouse operations and growth projections, stow’s suggested solution was to install a raised storage area (sometimes referred to as mezzanine floor). Raised storage areas dramatically increase warehouse storage capacity without increasing warehouse footprint. The floors are supported by stow’s selective pallet racking and have the capability to expand, move and be modified depending on future requirements. Added to this, racking can be installed on top of the raised floor area.

Installation of Wynns new storage solution commenced on 13 July, 2020. The warehouse needed to remain fully functional while the floor was being installed, and with a small footprint, it was very difficult to manoeuvre in. None of this was a problem for the experienced stow project team.

By now, stow’s teams are also accustomed to installing under Covid-19 conditions. In this case, and added to the usual safety precautions such as social distancing and sanitising, the stow team could not engage with Wynn’s staff and were restricted to the four walls of the warehouse.

In the first instance, current longspan shelving that abutted an existing raised floor, was removed. This existing floor meant stow’s new raised floor height had to be incredibly accurate to match it. Once the 140m2 of 5KPA rated floor was installed, the longspan shelving was reinstalled on top of the raised storage area. Wynns’ new raised storage area can support 500kg/m2 and allows for 300 linear metres of storage underneath.

Robust, efficient storage with room for growth

The raised storage area installation was completed in one week and delivered to Wynns Locksmiths on 20 July.

Martin Bates, National Sales Manager at stow, reflected on the great value that the raised storage area has delivered to Wynns Locksmiths.

“With this solution, stow has trebled the storage capability of Wynns’ parts area. And the high-strength floor means that our customer has no trouble accommodating heavy lock products, including safes,” said Martin.

Managing Director at Wynns Locksmiths, Steve Wynn, was impressed with the professionalism of entire stow team.

“From the initial call, to the design process, the construction roll-out and final handover, I was very impressed. The stow team kept my team informed on all facets of the project, and were able to work around an already busy warehouse with no problems. I would have no hesitation in recommending stow for your next warehouse project,” said Steve.
